Project Description

STEM Video Conference Technology

RECIPIENT: Diane Giorgi, Lino Lakes STEM Elementary

AMOUNT: $300

GRANT OVERVIEW

Lino Lakes Elementary received a TEFFLA grant to assist in the purchase of IP-based video conferencing equipment. This technology has been integrated into classroom to complement the school’s STEM curriculum. The IP-based video conferencing unit made it possible for students to participate in rich learning experiences without leaving the classroom. Via video conference, students have been able to connect in real time with nature experts (and howling wolves!) at the International Wolf Center in Ely, MN, with NASA engineers on the International Space Station, and with other experts around the world.

“The IP-based video conferencing unit we were able to purchase thanks to funds from the TEFFLA grant has made it possible for our students to participate in rich learning experiences far beyond the walls of our school without leaving the classroom. The intensity with which the 6th graders listened to NASA engineer, David Alexander, during our videoconference on space flight was a testament to the level of engagement videoconferencing brings to the classroom. And nothing could compare to the moment when, during the videoconference with Tara Johnson from the International Wolf Center in Ely, the wolves all spontaneously began howling as Tara was explaining the meaning of various wolf vocalizations. That was a truly exciting “teachable moment” that would not have been possible without the support of the TEFFLA grant. We are truly appreciative of the work that TEFFLA does to support education in our community.”
